Super Mates Episode 41: Return of the Vampire / Captain America Battles Baron Blood!

Return to the House of Franklin-Stein, Part 4

Giant-Sized Finale! In their last, harrowing trip  into the House of Franklin-Stein (for this year anyway), Chris and Cindy discuss 1943’s The Return of the Vampire starring Bela Lugosi as a vampire that is NOT Dracula. Seriously, he’s not. We mean it! In war-torn London, vampire Armand Tesla rises from his tomb to exact his revenge on those who vanquished him. Along the way we meet his werewolf minion, and even more unbelievable for a 1940s horror film, a strong female protagonist! How does this Columbia release stack up to the fabled Universal Monster series? The answer may surprise you!

Then, the Super Mates end the comic portions of the series in style, by taking a fond look at Captain America # 253 and 254 by Roger Stern, John Byrne, and Joe Rubenstein! The Star-Spangled Avenger answers the call of a friend and need…his old Invaders teammate, Union Jack! The aged hero is convinced a series of grisly murders are the work of his vampiric brother, Baron Blood! What follows is a timeless classic, with one of the most shocking endings of the Bronze Age of comics!

Super Mates Episode 40: Hammer’s The Mummy / The Thing Meets the Living Mummy!

Return to the House of Franklin-Stein, Part 3

Chris and Cindy dare to comb the tombs of the House of Franklin-Stein, and take a look at 1959’s The Mummy! This Hammer remake stars Christopher Lee in the title role of Kharis, the Mummy who awakens from his eternal sleep to exact revenge on those who would dare desecrate the rest of his princess, namely Peter Cushing!

Then, it’s Clobberin’ Time! The Super Mates review Marvel Two-In-One #95, by David Anthony Kraft and Alan Kupperberg. When his girlfriend Alica is possessed by an ancient Egyptian power, the ever-lovin’, blue-eyed Thing crosses paths with Marvel’s own Living Mummy! Is this comic worthy enough to be paired with the excellent movie above? Well, no, but its fun to talk about!

Super Mates Episode 39: Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man / Batman in “Moon of the Wolf”!

Return to the House of Franklin-Stein, Part 2

Chris, Cindy and son Andrew dare to venture once more into The House of Franklin-Stein, this time to discuss the classic Universal Monster mash-up, Frankenstein Meets the Wolf Man! The monster rally starts here, as cinema’s greatest lycanthrope Larry Talbot (Lon Chaney, Jr., of course!) seeks an end to his undying curse. Along the way he encounters none other than the Frankenstein Monster, played this time out by Bela Lugosi himself! You just know an epic battle between these two beasts is a’comin’, but is it any greater than the battles behind the scenes?

Then the intrepid trio dares to comb their dusty longboxes to pull out Batman #255, featuring “Moon of the Wolf” by Len Wein, Neal Adams and Dick Giordano! The Caped Crusader encounters a peeping tom in a furry mask…or is it a mask? Batman soon finds out when his old foe, Professor Milo unleashes a savage werewolf upon him! Plus, a look at the episode of Batman: The Animated Series that adapts this story!

Will Peter Cushing and a group of vampire hunters stop her in time?

Then we dig into the cobweb covered comic long boxes to read Action Comics Annual #1, by John Byrne, Art Adams and Dick Giordano. Lynda Carter must leave Paradise Island once more, this time to help Lyle Wagonner’s Steve Trevor, Jr. stop a group of terrorists! What did the Super Mates think of the transition to the “modern” era? Does this episode hold up to the fabled World War II-centric first season? Only one way to know for sure!

Then it’s off to the comic rack, for DC’s Brand-New Wonder Woman ’77 comic, based on this version of the television series! Wonder Woman goes clubbin’ and runs afowl (get it) of the Silver Swan!
